Is good and evil can exist side by side in nature? Essay

I believe that good and evil can co-exist in nature. Good and evil are two contrasting words, both of these words can be defined differently depending on the persons views and lifestyle although the overall definition of these words will be along the same lines of killing is evil and helping others is good . I also believe that good and evil work together in nature, to survive in the wild animals must prey upon one another in order to survive. Animals survive on their natural instincts that they have developed since birth to survive in the wild, in order to live one must kill something weaker to feed on. Nature is bound by the law survival of the fittest, the strongest and fastest animals eat the smaller and weaker creatures, to say it is evil for a wolf to kill a sheep is saying nature itself is evil. If a predator does not kill anything he cannot support himself or his family and will eventually perish, this is like the Nazi in the concentration camp at Belsen, mentioned in the poem(lines 30-50). The commandant is mercilessly killing Jews in order to support his family. In his own mind the Nazi is doing the right thing by supporting his family, but it is at the cost of annihilating thousands of innocent people which tips the scales towards the Nazi doing more evil than good. On lines 32-35 it says fumes of human roast clinging rebelliously to his hairy nostrils will stop† These lines symbolise the Nazi s conscience, he is trying to forget about all the death he has caused and momentarily thinks of himself as evil, but he then tries to repent to all the killing on lines 35-40 at the wayside street-shop and pick up a chocolate for his tender offspring waiting at home for Daddy s return by buying his child sweets and reminding himself that he has a family to support, and they(like the animals in the wild) without the support will die. The pair of vultures create a lot of irony in this poem, it shows the good and evil sides of these birds. On lines 7-8 the poem says nestled close to his mate an on lines 11-13 a dump of gross feathers, inclined affectionately to hers. Both these quotes show the strong companionship of the two birds and how in love, dependant and committed they are to each other. Those lines make me think that two creatures so devoted to each other could never do something evil. The poem then turns to the other face of the birds on lines 13-17 Chinua has written Yesterday they picked the eyes of a swollen corpse in a water-logged trench and ate the things in its bowel that shows them in a darker lighting. Vultures arebirds known throughout the world for their unattractiveness and their taste for eating rotting corpses. Most people do not assume that something so foul and hideous can find love and feel compassion towards another, this is where the irony is created. A lot more irony is also on lines 23-28 â€Å"Indeed how love in other ways so particular will pick a corner in that charnel-house tidy it up there, perhaps even fall asleep this quote shows irony because the two vultures decide to nestle together affectionately in a house that stores human bones. The poems structure is written in free verse, suggesting the freedom that the Nazi s(lines 30-50) had in the concentration camps, it can also symbolise the freedom of the two vultures that are mentioned in thefirst half of the poem(lines1-29). The poem also reflects the poets feelings of war, they have considered both sides of the war and of each person, on one hand they are killing people and on the other hand they are following orders and protecting their country and family. The vultures show that the people fighting wars have to let go of their emotions during the war and how they are still the same person no matter what. To conclude, I strongly believe that good and evil can exist together in nature, good and evil balance one another out, when one animal dies another is born in it s place, when someone has suffered from a traumatic experience they can use it to help others in the same crisis, when a country is suffering due to war or natural disaster other countries unite to help re-build that country. You can always find something good from an evil occurrence.

Nordstrom: Dissension in the Ranks? Essay

Q1) What is the cause of the problems described in the case? How serious are these problems? The main problems of Nordstrom are its compensation and incentives policies that are distorted. This company uses a Sales-per-Hour ratio as the leading in performance evaluation and work compensation. This performance indicator is not properly balanced by other important factors, such as customer satisfaction, it just focus the sales and the number of hours worked. The integral part of the problem is also the differentiation of â€Å"non-sell† and â€Å"selling† hours. The lack of transparent performance measures also spelled trouble for the employees of the company. They are always working a lot, not being paid for the extra hours of work and the measure used by the SPH are not the best ones. Nordstrom’s employees work off the clock and those hours are not paid. To have the excellent customer satisfaction that the company has, employees have to pay a lot of attention to their customers. They spent a lot of hours with them with a personalized contact and all of these hours are not paid. The employees are who build the image, the strong customer loyalty and their desires are not being valorized. The failure of management to professionalize the relationship between management and employees is another problem. Employees are expected to work beyond the prescribed working hours without pay in order to comply with company requirements. Nordstrom is concentrating only on numbers, they are developing a company culture where it seems that quantity mattered more than quality. This compensation and incentive system brought some consequences to Nordstrom. The lack of a clear distinction between â€Å"selling time† and â€Å"non-sell† leads to a big pressure to the employees since the SPH ratio doesn’t reflect the effort and work made by the salespeople. This leads to employee complaints and lack of motivation to work in the company. Also, the existence of such fear competition could lead to undesired behavior such as stealing credits for sales from another sales staff. This motivation policy was one of the Nordstrom proud systems but became more a liability than an advantage. Employees started to complain and soon this system became the target of law suits that damaged Nordstrom reputation and brought negative media attention to the company. Nordstrom was known has one of the best places to work and with this unhappiness expressed by salespeople that reputation started to drop off and the turn-over rate  increased. The focus of the law suits was the pressure maid and lack of compensation for the extra hours worked. Employees were encouraged to work extra hours but were not compensated for them. Nordstrom was targeted with several law suits and always denied the allegations made by the unions. Later, the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries stated that Nordstrom systematically violated state wage and hour laws, giving reason to the unions that took legal actions against Nordstrom and it had no other choice but to review their record-keeping procedures and compensate the worker’s loss. Later, due to the decrease of the company’s financial value as the stock price went down, another law suit was filled again against Nordstrom. This time it came from some stockholders that claimed to have suffered financial losses due to Nordstrom Management’s failure to take care of their labor problems and the claims maid. This law suit armed even more Nordstrom reputation.

An economic model of the brain drain Essay

The emigration of skilled labor is of great concern to most less developed countries as well as to some developed countries. One special category of the brain drain has been especially troublesome to LDC’s over the last twenty-five years. Indigenous college graduates frequently leave their countries for advance studies in the Western world, but only a handful return after completing their work. Migration of this type has been linked to several possible causes. The most frequently cited are lack of employment opportunities for returning graduates, lower salary levels in the indigenous country, the preference of graduates to live abroad, and asymmetric information in the labor market. The loss of their most educated workers abroad, the so-called brain drain, has been a major source to LDCs. At the same time that their development targets demand highly trained personnel, LDCs find that their younger intellectual elite accept employment in the country where they have received thei r advanced training, and do not return to their native land. A number of reasons have been offered to explain the brain drain problem, including lack of employment opportunities in the home country, low pay, and student preference to remain abroad. These reasons are not empirically compelling in many developing countries. In Taiwan, for example, employment opportunities exist at real wages which are comparable to those offered abroad. And while some students may prefer to live abroad, it seems difficult to explain the brain drain by this reason alone. This paper has shown that the brain drain may exist even when students have a preference for returning home and employment opportunities exist at comparable average pay. The reason for the problem is related to the information employers have at the time of hiring. We assume that employers in the country of education can more precisely determine a graduate’s potential productivity than can employers in the student’s native country. Employers in the native country are assumed to offer wages that reflect the average productivity of returning workers, but which are not precisely tailored to individual productivities. This difference in information can by itself lead to the brain drain problem. The extent of the problem was related to the average productivity of workers, and their bias towards returning home. Conditions under which the brain drain problem was complete, partial, and nonexistent were examined.

Strategic Management and Business Policy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Strategic Management and Business Policy - Essay Example It does not, however, imply centralized decision authority. Business policy determines strategic development of industries, sectors and markets. Business policy helps to indicate what changes in present situations may mean for the future and how a company can influence its market destiny. It induces innovative and risk-taking possibilities. By anticipating future situations, it guides present actions, which in turn shape the future. Business policy must not only concern itself with problems of the immediate future, such as the advertising campaign for next year's sales; it must deal with long-range problems as well. Intermediate and long-range marketing intelligence is a basic requisite for planning and decision making (Wheelen 32). Through its insights into risks and opportunity, Business policy can be used to redirect corporate effort to more profitable objectives. By anticipating changes and treating them as opportunities, it often leads to a redesign of marketing strategy, to development of longer-range perspectives, and to cultivation of a viewpoint of what can be done to adjust the corporate effort. The very bulk of marketing knowledge and the necessities of involving many departments add to the difficulties of obtaining adequate information. United Air Lines attacks this problem through a centralized information center near Chicago that accumulates and digests information from regional centers across the country. This center daily briefs management on the company's performance during the preceding 24 hours, including a digest of the performance of competitors (Wheelen 32). Business policy determines and stipulates interorganizational relations and strategic choices of companies. Business policy is concerned with social well-being and competition. But, in addition, marketing is rooted in profitable business action. Striking a balance between profitable marketing practice and the national interest presents a difficult challenge. Conflicts may arise. What is best for an individual firm, or what is sound marketing practice for it, may not be consonant with desired goals of society. If business can run itself according to desired social goals, then governmental power and regulation may be kept to a minimum. Competitive markets have proven to be the most progressive economically and the most just socially. A market system responds to the wishes and standards of society. Competition and keen business rivalry assure customers of those items that best satisfy their wants and needs while rewarding the most efficient firms. By so doing, the marketing system serve s as both a regulated and a regulating mechanism (Wheelen 88). Government regulation of marketing is the result of a long evolution of acts, court decisions, and interpretations. It aims to protect our competitive system by seeking to prevent unfair and unreasonable competition, and by assuring entry and growth of competitors. Although it is relatively easy to state desirable goals for government regulations, the design and enforcement of such goals in specific instances, through legal actions and court decisions, is difficult at best. The complexity and multidimensional nature of the marketing process, coupled with its innovative base, indicates the likelihood of some uncertainty about legal issues in marketing (Wheelen 66). Where guidelines are clear,

African Americans and Dementia Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

African Americans and Dementia - Research Paper Example African Americans may have less knowledge about health care institutions that care for dementia patients. Awareness about the availability of health institutions and health services present in the society is crucial in providing care for dementia patients. Knowledge about assessment center is crucial in proving care for the African American elders, who suffer from the disease more than any other age group in society (Ethnic Elders Care Network, 2012). The availability of finances also affects the treatment of dementia. Lack of adequate financial resources has been attributed to poor dementia care in the African American community. In particular, African American elders are often uninsured or economically disadvantaged. They cannot afford to pay for the medical care needed to manage dementia symptoms (Ethnic Elders Care Network, 2012). Mistrust between the caregiver and the patient has also been reported as a major barrier to treatment. African Americans have avoided seeking medical h elp due to the lack of cultural diversity in medical teams. In addition, African Americans are dissatisfied with the formal health care available for them in their communities (Ethnic Elders Care Network, 2012). Consequently, racial discrimination has been attributed to a lack of treatment for patients suffering from dementia. In particular, bias against African Americans has been reported in medical institutions. Discriminatory admission practices; have led to few African American seeking medical help to counter the symptoms of dementia (Ethnic Elders Care Network, 2012). Effective treatment of dementia; demands establishment of a rapport within members of caregiver networks. Family members are advised to identify certain caregivers they can consult regularly to help the patient overcome the effects of dementia. In addition, proper communication with the caregivers is also crucial. Family members should ensure that they communicate all details to the caregiver. There are instances whereby family members may or may not want clearly labeled medication. They should communicate with the caregiver if they feel uneasy about the label of the medication.

Changes in Network Structure and Ownership of US Broadcast Television Case Study

Changes in Network Structure and Ownership of US Broadcast Television - Case Study Example The site inspection conducted on 3 selected venues at London Hilton, the London Park Lane and the International Continental Hotel, Park Lane and the key issues involved in hiring a particular venue are elaborated. Further, these 3 venues are compared and analysed for the suitability of choosing a specific venue to stage the event. The wedding day is one the most memorable moment in a girl's life. Therefore, it is the aspiration of every girl to celebrate it in a unique, memorable and fascinating way. The bride and the group want to celebrate this wedding in a secular way as none of them has any religious background. After discussing various ideas as to how this event should be celebrated, it is decided to do a 1920's themed wedding so as to impress the attendees with a different and unique experience in which the food, the d'cor, the flower arrangements and the dress have typical elements to mark it an 'poque. They want to celebrate their commitment and share this beautiful day with their friends and family. The attendees being in the range of 30-70 of age are encouraged to be highly appreciated for their formal dress according to the occasion. The style of the themed wedding is formal and emphasis is laid on elegance, sophistication and grandeur of the 1920's. The attendees coming from abroad are accommodated in a 5 star hotel.. 3. Venue selection process Over the past 10 years the demand from the private and public sector to hold the sports and festival events has been increased. Consequently, the venues have to be selected according to the demand and nature of the festival to accommodate and entertain the attendees. Monroe (2006) describes two types of venue verities available; the standard type venues like hotels, conference centres and restaurants, and the non-standard venues, built for other purpose than staging events, like museums, stadiums and parks. There are also unique venues like airports, hangers and historical sites etc. He further highlights the advantages of the purpose-built venues as they are cost-effective and usually provide most of the standard requirements, while the non-standard venues have limited services to offer to their customers, hence, the manager of the event has to work around with what is available (Monroe, 2006). Finding a suitable cost-effective venue is a constant challenge for the event organizer (Confex 2007). London Launch reveals there are more and more venues that see potential to increase their revenue by hiring buildings out for special events. In London alone, there are more than thousand of venues available to cater for all types of events. Yeoman et at (2006) is of the view that the venue selection process is one the most important element for staging an event as the success or failure depends solely on its right selection. Therefore, the following aspects should be given due consideration before selecting a venue. Does the venue match with the selected theme' What is the capacity of the venue' Is the venue accessible' What facilities does the venue offer' What is the price and what is included' What is the availability perspective' What is the venue's reputation'

Virtualization Design and Implementation Guide for the SMB Research Paper

Virtualization Design and Implementation Guide for the SMB - Research Paper Example Virtualization can be regarded as part of the overall enterprise IT trend (Langone and Leibovici, 2012). This project aims at illustrating concepts of virtualization and the application of the same concepts towards improving the performances of the SMBs effectively and efficiently. Virtualization has had different application in the business field. One of the enterprise IT includes the automatic computing a case that is defined by an IT environment that manages itself based on the utility computing and perceived activity. In this case, the computer processing power is pegged on the utility that the customer is able to pay as per the requirements (Langone and Leibovici, 2012). Virtualization often aims at centralizing administrative tasks while improving the overall hardware resource utilization and the scalability. Notably, virtualization allows parallel application of several operating systems on a one central processing unit (CPU) (Alvarez, 2011). The parallelism in the operation h erein often leads to the reduction in the overall cost of operation. However, the entire process differs from multitasking that involves running series of programs on a single operating system. The use of Virtualization allows enterprises to better their managements as well as allowing frequent updates and rapid changes to the OS and its applications without interfering with the user (Alvarez, 2011). Moreover, it dramatically improves the availability and efficiency of applications and resources in the organization. Ultimately, virtualization has broken the old norm of one server, one application, which led to underutilization of resources (Gasston, 2011). The application of the virtual resources has dramatically met the needs in the business field without extra use of other resources. The small and midsize business (SMB) often uses twenty or less servers. Therefore, it is vital to develop a highly available (HA) towards configuring software and hardware virtualization. To achieve t he desired virtualization configuration, there is need to develop VMware including VMware Site Recovery Manger (SRM). Additionally, there is need to have network storage solution since this is the only way to mange the configuration (Alvarez, 2011). The SMBs often have some difficulties in accessing virtualized solutions especially towards meeting their needs. Therefore, there are need to develop guideline upon which can assist the SMBs to apply the virtualization effectively (Alvarez, 2012). Notably, there are numerous buzz around the VMware; however, its underlying function and application is to reduce the cost and improving availability within the enterprise organizations (Langone and Leibovici, 2012). Nonetheless, there should be a clear guide to set up and configure VMware as it is to the Microsoft Windows Servers. Thus, the main aim of this essay is to develop a guide of an SMB VMware and hosting in a virtualization platform (Alvarez, 2012). The guide is vital for any virtuali zation program since the staff especially those who have never had access to the program should be able to mange the same. Additionally, the staff or customer should pursue the sever virtualization and the operating system they working they should remain operational. The virtualization should also be developed on the operating system that is known and well understood by the targeted clients. Hence, it

Tort law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Tort law - Essay Example The following sections of this assessment are specifically going to focus on the relevant statutes that can be inferred when negotiating for a settlement as well as remedies. Case list and relevant statutes Briefly outline any cases/statutes you have researched in this area which are relevant to our client’s claim. This should be more than just a bulleted list. Basically, tort law commonly refers to a civil wrong not arising from a contract and in the case of negligence, everyone has a duty of care owed to the neighbour (Capiro Industries vs. Dickman 1990). Cooke (2010) suggests that a remedy can be given in the form of compensation where the plaintiff can prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant owed duty of care in the event of injury. Thus, in case of tort law, specific duties apply to everyone and are imposed by the law. According to Terry & Giugni (2009), there are four elements of the tort of negligence that have to be proved by the plaintiff and these include th e following: there is need to prove that the defendant owed the plaintiff a duty of care, the defendant breached that duty by falling below expected standards, the defendant’s conduct caused the plaintiff to suffer physical or economic harm (causation) and the harm suffered by the plaintiff was reasonably foreseeable (remoteness). Under common law, duty of care must be observed whereby the breach of such duty, causation of damage, remoteness of damage and the defences would be taken into account as illustrated in the following cases below. Facts The case of Murphy v Brentwood[1991] 1 A.C. 398 can be used to establish the duty care owed by the contractors in the construction industry. Issue Were defendants negligent? Rule They were negligent because they did not take into account safety precautions when constructing the house. In our case, we did not constantly check the state of condition of our buildings. Analysis The court found that the engineers as well as contractors wer e negligent when they failed to take necessary measures to ensure that they construct a solid foundation of the house. In the case of Blyth v Birmingham Water Works Company, the facts are as follows; the defendants installed a fire plug near the plaintiff’s house that leaked during a severe frost, causing water damage and the jury found the defendant negligent, and the defendant appealed. Issue Were the defendants negligent? Rule Defendants can only be negligent when they fail to do what a reasonable person can do. Analysis This was an accident caused by natural causes. The case of Bolam V Friern 1957 also illustrates a case involving negligence but the court ruled in favour of the doctor because he was acting within his profession. In most cases, for a claim to be successful, the four elements mentioned above have to be proved. The Occupiers’ Liability Act (OLA) 1957 is mainly concerned with the duty care owed to the occupiers of a building and these can be classified as employees or visitors. They ought to take into consideration the risk of danger that may prevail. On the other hand, the employer is liable for breach of his duty if he fails to provide his employees with safety as well as safe equipment to use (Wilson and Clyde Coal Co Ltd v English [1938 ] AC 57 (HL) 141). This also includes a duty to

Cuban missel crisis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Cuban missel crisis - Essay Example However the Soviet Union did not posses arms capable enough of striking targets in United States; the Soviet missiles could only reach targets in Europe. Considering this, the Soviet Leadership under Nikita Khrushchev decided to deploy nuclear arsenals in Cuba, a country where the Soviets had great influence and which was a major threat to the United States in the region. The idea behind the decision was to bring United States in striking range of Soviet missiles and it was conceived to act as a detterent against any potential attack by the United States on the Soviet territory. Fidel Castro, the Cuban dictator wanted the Soviet Union to help him out for saving his regime because ever since the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, Castro was feeling that a second attack was imminent. Threat from United States made Castro to approve and support the Soviet Union’s program of deploying the Soviet nuclear arms in Cuba. After the formal approvals from the Cuban government and autho rities, the Soviet army took practical steps to deploy the missiles in Cuba and during the summer of 1962 the missile installations were built in Cuba (Schier). The actual crisis began when reconnaissance photographs revealed that the Soviets were construction missile base in Cuba. President John Kennedy took immediate action and formed a committee of his twelve most important advisors for solving the crisis. After long deliberations and debates among the governmental departments and authorities, it was decided that a naval quarantine will be imposed around Cuba for preventing the Russian missiles from reaching Cuba (Hilsman). After the establishment of the quarantine, the President addressed the public and informed the nation about the missile installations. He also warned the Soviet leadership about the possible consequences of any sort of armed aggression against the United States. He said that any attack launched from Cuba will be considered as an attack on the United States: â €Å"It shall be the policy of this nation to regard any nuclear missile launched from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere as an attack on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon Soviet Union†¦ I call upon Chairman Khrushchev to halt and eliminate this clandestine, reckless and provocative threat to world peace and to stable relations between our two nations. I call upon him further to abandon this course of world domination, and to join in a historic effort to end the perilous arms race and to transform the history of man. He has an opportunity now to move the world back from the abyss of destruction by returning to his government’s own words that it had no need to station missiles outside its own territory, and withdrawing these weapons from Cuba.† The tensions gradually built up as the Soviets showed little flexibility in their stance of deploying missiles in Cuba. A letter was received from Khrushchev calling for a guarantee from US not to attack Cuba, later the Soviet leader demanded the removal of United States missiles from Turkey in return of removal of missiles from Cuba. After the US agreed to issue a guarantee that it will not invade Cuba the tensions began to ease out and the Soviet leade

2 responses paper - Case Study Example Acceptance of the technology is a way in which the democracy is being overlooked, further dismissing it as unnecessary and inconveniencing. I do not concur with the article. Obviously, the issue is a contest between privacy and security. In resolving the issue, I think it is important for one to question what matters between the two. Here, the answer is simple; breaching the right to privacy is not as serious as disregarding security. For one obvious reason, whereas breaching privacy may only inconvenience people, overlooking the pertinence of security would not only cause inconveniences, but also lose of lives, in the case of terrorist bombing. Clearly, it is a contest that touches on the right to life, as well. In my view, a lot of people have lost lives as a result of terrorism. The memories of September 11 attacks are still fresh and speak loudly. Besides, It cannot be disputed that airport security remains one of the issues of serious concern for most airports in the world since it also touches on safety. As such, airport security comprises of various methods and techniques that are aimed at protecting aircrafts, a s well as airports from criminal activities. This way, security protects the travelers, the airport employees and the freight. Airport security is aimed at curbing criminal activities that pertain to hijacking, destruction of aircrafts and airports, and assault on employee and passenger. Amnesty Essay Example for Free

Amnesty Essay Ever since we started campaigning in 1961, we’ve worked around the globe to stop the abuse of human rights. Amnesty International Goals and strategy AI aims to maintain every humans basic rights as established under the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. In accordance with this belief, Amnesty works to: †¢Free all Prisoners of Conscience (a POC is a person imprisoned for the peaceful exercise of their beliefs, which differs somewhat from the typical use of the term political prisoner). †¢Ensure fair and prompt trials. †¢Abolish all forms of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners, including the use of the death penalty. End state-sanctioned terrorism, killings, and disappearances. Amnesty International works to combat individual offences (e. g. one man imprisoned for distributing banned literature in Saudi Arabia) as well as more general policies (e. g. the recently overturned policy of executing juvenile offenders in certain U. S. states). Amnesty works primarily on the local level but its forty-year history of action and its Nobel Peace Prize give it international recognition. Most AI members utilize letter-writing to get their message across. When the central Amnesty International organization finds and validates to its satisfaction instances of human rights abuse, they notify each of more than 7,000 local groups as well as over one million independent members, including 300,000 in the United States alone. Groups and members then respond by writing letters of protest and concern to a government official closely involved in the case, generally without mentioning Amnesty directly. Amnesty International follows a neutrality policy called the country rule stating that members should not be active in issues in their own nation, which also protects them from potential mistreatment by their own government. This principle is also applied to researchers and campaigners working for the International Secretariat to prevent domestic political loyalties influencing coverage. Recently, Amnesty has expanded the scope of its work to include economic, social and cultural rights, saying that these concerns had arisen out of its traditional work on political and civil rights. Its 2004 annual report said that it is difficult to achieve sustainable progress towards implementation of any one human right in isolation. AI will strive to assert a holistic view of rights protection. It will be particularly important to do so in relation to extreme poverty, and the human rights issues underlying poverty. [2] As an example it asserts that The right to effective political participation depends on a free media, but also on an educated and literate population. [3]

Hamlet Appearance Vs Reality English Literature Essay

Hamlet Appearance Vs Reality English Literature Essay In general, mankind tends to hide their emotions and actions to protect themselves or someone else to keep their discrete interests private. In the tragedy of Hamlet, almost all the fundamental characters have lied to each other to protect themselves. The lies may appear to be true if one does not carefully read and understand the thoughts and actions of Hamlet, Gertrude, Polonius, Claudius, and Rosencrantz Guildenstern. The characters may seem to act one way in a scene and then changing themselves in another scene. At the end of the tragedy, the intentions of each of the characters are publicized plus the ultimate consequence of their actions: death. The story revolves around Hamlet where he is the perfect example of someone appearing to be different than what his actions prove him to be. This is done to mislead his true motives and intentions. I will tell you why. So shall my anticipation prevent your discovery and your secrecy to the king and queen moult no feather. I have of late-but wherefore I know not-lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises, and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory; this most excellent canopy, the air-look you, this brave oerhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire-why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapors (II. ii, 293-303). This is a perfect example of Hamlet stating directly about appearance and reality. The denotation of the first sentence implies that Hamlet is testing the trustworthiness of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Hamlet probably already figured out that the King and Queen asked RG to talk to Hamlet to find out whats wrong with him. In the second sentence, Hamlet proves to RG that he is crazy on purpose so the King and Queen wont discover Hamlets true motives. Lastly, it seemed that RG received the message about Hamlet and this gave Hamlet time to think about what actions to take to get revenge. But Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are appearing in a different way. RG are appearing to be Hamlets longtime friends but they are in this situation because of money and greed. They are not aware of the real issues and they really dont care too much about Hamlets feelings. They are also confused about the situation and try to make the best of it, but in the end, Hamlet sends them off to die. Hamlets mother, Gertrude, appears in a way that is disgusting in reality. In Act I. ii, Claudius tries to calm Hamlet over his grief of his dead father but Gertrude wants to keep Hamlet there for her personal family reasons. After this happens, Hamlet rambles on saying, within a month, Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears, Had left the flushing in her galled eyes, She married (I. ii, 153-156).Hamlet is disgraced with the events after his fathers death. After the death of Hamlets father, Gertrude portrayed herself to be a person in mourning by shedding tears and acting as if she was in agony. After Claudius becomes king and they get married, Hamlet realized that his mothers tears were deceptive since she quickly got remarried and showed no remorse over Hamlet senior. Hamlet probably thought that his mother should not have gotten married so quickly to Claudius. This was a dishonorable thing to do to the old king. Hamlet possibly believed that his mother was adulterous and this may have caused him to hate women in general, including Ophelia. Because of this event, Hamlet became harsh on Ophelia, criticizing her wearing makeup because it hides ones true nature. His mothers action changes Hamlets view about Ophelia. He thinks that Ophelia isnt as pure as he thinks and she may also be hiding something. Claudius himself is no different from the rest of the characters. He appears to be someone different than what his actions prove him to be by the fact that he killed his brother, Hamlet. Claudius wanted the power and rulership to carry out his dream. In Act 4, Claudius is talking to Gertrude and says Whose whisper oer the worlds diameter, as levels as the cannon to his blank transports his poisoned shot, may miss our name and hit the woundless air. Oh come away! My soul is full of discord and dismay (IV. i., 41-45). While conversing with Gertrude, Claudius appears to be worried about Hamlets psychological health, not because Hamlet is acting crazy, but because Claudius is fearful that Hamlet may have learn the truth about him while he was praying and from Hamlets performers that portrayed the events that happened almost exactly the way Claudius murdered his father. Claudius wanted to send Hamlet away to be executed but Hamlet managed to make it back to Denmark avoiding death. Literally speaking, the quote mentions how Claudius hates slander and it can travel very far all around the earth. He might be also saying that he does not want a bad reputation for him and his kingdom over certain mishaps. Polonius is the Kings councilor and appears to be a good person at heart. He is Ophelias and Laertes father. As a father normally do, he gives his blessing to his son, to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Farewell. My blessing season this in thee (I. iii. 1 78-81). Here Polonius wishes his son the best. Even though Polonius gave Laertes his blessing, he is fearful of what his son might do when he is away on his own, so he sends Reynaldo to spy on him. Polonius is also worried about Ophelia and wants her to stop seeing Hamlet. Polonius uses Hamlets madness as a way to be agreeable with the king and be on his worthy side. Polonius misleads the King and his family into believing that he has good motives and intentions. Polonius speaks thoughtfully and carefully to his superiors so he appears to be very knowledgeable. The characters in this play dont all appear to be who they actually pretend to be. Hamlet appeared to be crazy for a couple of reason but mainly to prevent anyone from discovering his plot. Gertrude appears to be mournful for Hamlet seniors death, but quickly forgets that she is in mourning when she marries Claudius and Hamlet takes out his anger on Ophelia. Claudius also appears to be a nice and caring king for his subjects but in Hamlets case, Claudius knows Hamlet is conspiring against him and is being cautious. Lastly, Polonius seems to be a caring father but tricks his family while trying to be on the kings good side. So something is truly rotten in Denmark.

Little Price Story :: essays research papers

It all happened one day while I was sitting in my back yard trying to come up with ideas for my English paper. I had to write about my family. A little boy, maybe 8 or 9, my age, walked through the back gate and just stood there looking a bit confused. I asked him who he was and what he was looking for, and he responded, â€Å"Are you looking for a friend also?†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I loved meeting new people so I said, â€Å"Sure, why not?† He asked me what I was doing and I explained my whole English paper project. He seemed pretty interested in what I had to say which surprised me because I thought this project was pretty boring. He then asked if he could help me and I said yes since I needed all the help I could get.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"What is your name?† I asked.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Name? Well the people on my planet just call me †Little Prince†. What is your umm name?†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"On your planet? What do you mean on your planet?†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"My planet, Sublime. What is your name?†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Jacob, but I am still confused.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Don’t worry about it. I’ll explain some other time.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  So that was my first encounter with the Little Prince. I figured since he was going to be helping me write about my family, he should meet my family. I brought the Little Prince in to my house and up to my sister’s room where she was getting ready for her â€Å"big date† she had been babbling about ALL week.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Hannah, this is my new friend I just met today. He is going to help me with my family project.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"I don’t have time to worry about you and your little friends. I only have three hours until my date!†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Three hours?! It takes you that long to get ready?†, asked the Little Prince.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Well, yeah. I have to look really good for this guy!† Then the Little Prince looked at me and told me my sister was too caught up in self image, and that she worries too much about what others think about her. So now I have learned one new thing about my older sister. â€Å"Caught up in self image†¦Ã¢â‚¬ I thought I should jot that down on my yellow notepad that contains my notes for my paper (even though I did not have very many notes to begin with). I then heard my dad in the living room yelling at the television.

Dress Codes and School Uniforms Essay -- Education Clothing Essays

Dress Codes and School Uniforms The ringing of the alarm clock that is placed conveniently beside your bed wakes you. The sound startles your brain into getting out of your warm, cozy bed. It is time to go to school. You must wake up now in order to make it on time. If you are late again, your teacher will probably give you that nasty look of dismissal. What are you going to wear? Is this a dilemma you face each morning? Do you have trouble wanting to get out of your bed, and then you are faced with the troubling question of what cool, clean, unwrinkled outfit you should wear that day? Do you think your life would be easier if you could just throw on a uniform? This way you might not have to think so hard in the morning, right after that bellowing alarm clock frightens you into facing the world. Or do you like being able to express your individuality? This is an important question to think about. The first amendment gives each person in this nation the right to free expression. You should be able to dress as you wish and not feel pressured to dress in a uniform manner, with the rest of you student body. Right? I agree with this latter statement. "Currently 20% of the nation's school districts use uniforms, most of them voluntarily" (Portner, 2001). The states included in this percentage are: California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia. Long Beach, California was the first to enforce voluntary school uniform policies into their schools. Psychological Research Report on Memory Essay -- essays research paper

ABSTRACT How is memory encoded and what methods can lead to greater recall? There have been many different models suggested for human memory and many different attempts at defining a specific method of encoding that will lead to greater recall. In this experiment subjects are asked to do a semantic task on a word related to them and an orthographic task in which they analyze the letter in the word. The results of the experiment indicate that the words which where encoded semantically and are related to the self have greater recall. INTRODUCTION In the last half century several theories have emerged with regard to the best model for human memory. In each of these models there was a specific way to help people recall words and images. The first model of memory is the short term and long term memory. In this model information is temporarily stored in the short term memory. Over here it is easily and quickly recalled and it can stay in short term memory and be recalled if the person rehearses it. When information leaves short term memory it goes into long term memory. While long term memory has a much larger storage capacity it is harder to recall items from long term memory. It has been proposed that items from long term memory are recalled by having large part of it placed in short term memory where it is examined to see if it has the necessary piece of information. If it doesn’t then either the person gives up on recalling it or takes another large set of information from long-term memory to examine. (Atkinso n & Sciffrin 1971). However this multi-store view of memory has not provided a strong enough explanation for scientists. Another theoretical view of memory is the idea that memory is based on depth of proce... ...nitially rehearsed by recognition could have greater recall. An example would if this experiment asked subjects to again find a letter in a word if the word appeared before. It has also been shown in this experiment that words that are related to oneself can lead to greater recall. However this experiment has not tested whether words related to oneself have a greater recall then other words that are encoded semantically since the other grouping of words were not semantically encoded. Theo 104 Biblical Worldview Essay

Worldview scriptural Es take Theology 104 Ericka Morales Introduction The bourne image of divinity fudge occurs three propagation in the Bible. In Genesis 126-27 and 96, we knock out that piece is created in the image of God. In 2 Cor. 44 we see the contrive used in makeence to savior who is the image of God. There is no pack understanding of what the phrase means, but we peck generalize. It would seem that the first two verses refer to Gods character and attributes that atomic number 18 reflected in people. The bourn backsidenot be a reference to a physical appearance of God since rescuer says in John 424 that God is Spirit, and in Luke 2439 Spirit does not ask number and b sensations. Therefore, we heap conclude that the image of God deals with humanitys reflection of God in such things as mildness, rationality, love, hatred, fellowship, etc. God exhibits either of these characteristics, as do people. Example 1 A groovy starting tear is to look upon others be cause God said to.For example, we contemplate in the Bible that husbands and wives are to treasure their spouse and the wife mustiness repute her husband Ephesians 533. Husbands, in the aforementi whizd(prenominal) way are considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with gaze 1 Peter 37. The same regulation applies to other relationships. Peter wrote that we should show take to be to everyone. You can respect your spouse, child, parent, boss or others because of their position. Acknowledge that others imbibe weaknesses. Everyone is imperfect.Be careful not to let their failures erode your respect for their corking qualities. Look for things that you can respect. You can chance on something to respect in anybody if you look gravid enough. Respect others as children of God. I elaborate in a retirement fraternity and everyday I interact with residents, families, doctors and values and my bosses the administrator and executive music director and co-workers. I find that by showing respect to every person I come in contact with not only serves Gods blueprint for me, but my plan for my self.I prevail a resident who comes into my office several quantify a day and she does not concoct coming in five bits before and even though I take a crap work that unavoidably to be completed I tip what I am doing and take the clock season to show this resident respect and listen. sometimes it may even be that she doesnt need my assistance with anything, she just essentials a conversancyly face and a good listener. I entrust when I am older a need a friend someone will be at that place for me as well. I halt and listened to show respect to my elder and that what she had to say was meaningful and valuable.Example 2 God wants us to stir a heart of mercy for others. Compassion involves feeling, but it involves so more more. If we only feel, and so we are sympathetic. If our reason motivates us to act, then it becomes grace. True shame f eels and it acts. Notice that compassion begins with feeling. Without feeling, there is no compassion. Feeling is not enough, but it is a place to begin. If we do not hollo for those who are pain in the neck, how can we minister to them? We must be about the Saviors preoccupation with people.I believe that if we serve hurting people, encourage those in despair, help those in need, and hurt with those in pain, we will vex not only enriched their lives but have done exactly what God would want us to do. People dont go where the action is people go where the love is. I have worked in the geriatric nursing field my blameless adult life and the most of import impact on the lives that I make is my ability to be compassionate. I find that when a spouse or children pull away their mother or father it is the one of the most traumatic times in their lives.Every person handles grief differently so each time I have consoled a spouse or family division it is different. Ive held there han ds, given them a hug, shared Gods discussion with them, prayed, and in some cases just been a shoulder to cry on. But if can I can be there for a person in their time of loss and offer compassion and hope and remind them that God is with them, I infer it makes a big residual. I have family members and spouses that years down the road have seen in and thanked me for helping them by means of one of the roughest days of their life.I may not be able to help everyone but the ones I can help I commend God would want me too. I have found that by helping others it has created a reward in my life that is immeasurable. expiry Finally, because everyone is made in the image of God, then everyone should be treated with proper respect and honor because they reflect God. Of course, we know that more people are full of abhorrence and hatred and we must guard ourselves and others against them. Still, we are to treat others with respect. During His time on earth, deliveryman was the embodime nt of Gods compassion.Scripture much tells us that Christ was moved with compassion by the suffering of the people star sign 634, 82. Simple acts of compassion make a difference in every area of life. When our children run through the house and fall down, they need a hug or a osculation to make everything all right. When a friend finds themselves in a tough situation, a listening ear makes all the difference in the world. When someone is sick, a scrub or a card can brighten their day. By showing respect and compassion everyday you can enrich your life and the life of others.

Dante’s Inferno: Contrapasso Essay

Contrapasso core suffer the opposite. It refers to the penalty of souls in Dantes nether region by a process either resembling or contrasting with the breach itself. T here argon numerous ideals of contrapasso in Dantes Inferno, as he travels ever so deeper into the depths of hell. In the Inferno, we argon given a number through Hell by Dante, who is a middle-aged man. The Inferno is a story of a journeying given by two different Dantes Dante the pilgrim and Dante the author. He has a natural emotion of pity, which he is frequently reprimanded for. At the beginning of his journey, he is confronted by terce animals. These animals represent the three rings of Hell. The first hotshot is the she-wolf, representing dissoluteness, the wink is the lion, representing emphasis, and the third is the leopard, representing imposture and deception. According to Dante, fraud and deception be the overcome sins, followed by violence, hence incontinence. Virgil is Dantes guide thro ugh pop out this tr distributivelyerous journey. Dante uses the innovation of contrapasso to express his own views on ethics of as formed sins, reflecting on the cultural and political state of Italy at the time. Before Dante and Virgil enter Hell proper, they find the opportunists in the vestibule. They be running a go wildly chasing a banner, while nude being stung by hornets and wasps. When the split came between the Tempter and graven image, they tried to quench neutral, and now they must suffer their penalization. Here, the banner symbolizes a leader, serving as a direct punishment for their indecisive nature. They come across limbo close, where the pious pagans be. These are the souls of good non-Christians, who are stuck in limbo because they were never baptized and never went to church to direct Jesus. This is where Virgil and the poets re billet.Limbo is not a bad institutionalize to be, and their only punishment is that they will never conk out to see the face of God. This is a fitting punishment because while alive they never knew of God, and now they are forbidden from him. They encounter the least offensive sinners in the first ring of Hell, represented by the she-wolf. at a time inside the gates of Hell, Dante encounters the brute (or lustful). The souls who are in this first fraction of Hell are so because they let their lusts control them in tone. The punishment of the Carnal is that they are trapped in a whirlwind, rash storm. They see the object of their lust, nevertheless they cannot clear devolve on in Hell. They are doomed to chase their sleep with around in the whirlwind, and they cannot satisfy their needs in any way. Contrapasso is appropriate here because while lifespan they could not control their urges and always satisfied their needs, but now in Hell they are not allowed to. In circle three of Hell, we find the gluttons. Ciacco is a representative of the gluttons whom Dante knows personally. Ciacco means hog i n Italian. Because gluttony is a sin of incontinence, their punishment is wallowing around in a slushy mound of garbage. The gluttons are in a storm of putrefaction. Gluttony was considered a study sin back in Dantes day. excessively in this circle are the hoarders and wasters. They contribute to each others punishment as they are in a constant rock war. Hoarders and wasters are two extremes. This is contrapasso because the hoarders are constantly trying to move out the rock, while the wasters are trying to get relinquish of it. Next, they come across the wrathful and sullen. They are stuck in the Marsh of Styx. The sullen were drawn within themselves and tried not to associate with others in life, they took a thorniness disposition towards life.Their punishment is appropriate because they are stuck at the bottom of the marsh, beneath the slimy surface. Moving along through Hell, Dante and Virgil come across the heretics. This is a sort of a transitional stage between the sins of incontinence and violence. A heretic is anyone who doesnt adhere to strict Catholic doctrine. Heretics committed some of the worst crimes, consort to Dante. Their punishment was to spend eternity in a grave on bang. Contrapasso is in effect here because heretics thought that the soul dies with the body, and since they believe their souls died, they are entombed. or so of them even have to share tombs with people they hated. The second category of sinners is the violent. There are three types of violence violence against neighbors, violence against self, and violence against God. The violent against neighbors are stuck in the river Phlegethon. This is a river of boiling blood, and if the sinners try to escape, centaurs have them with arrows. This is contrapasso because these violent souls left their victims in a kitty of blood when they murdered them, and now they are stuck in a pool of blood. Violence against self is the next form of violent sin. Those who committed suicide bec ame trees. Since they jilted Gods gift of body, they are laboured to stand still and see the human life they rejected. This is their contrapasso, also whenever a limb from the tree locomote off, they feel it. The final form of violence is that against God. These blasphemers, who feller God, are punish in circle seven, round 3. They are forced to lie in a field of burning sand and a fire rain constantly falls pile on them. This is ironic because it is the first time while Dante is in Hell that we actually see fire. Circle octette of Hell begins the worst sins, those of fraud and treachery. These sins are the worst because it breaks the trust of the individual. The usurers are loan sharks. They do not further mankind, they yet want money. According to The sanctum sanctorum Bible, it is unnatural to charge usury. Their punishment is to carry a pouch with lead weights around their necks. They constantly have to fight off fire and chains from thrashing devils with their hands. Th is is their contrapasso because they used to use their greedy hands to contumely people by taking their money. The panderers and seducers are penalize by having to constantly run from one side to another, and demons are there whipping them. The second section contains the flatterers. Because they lied and figuratively slung excrement from their mouths, they are punished by wallowing in excrement, which they flatter. This is a perfect example of contrapasso. The fortune tellers and diviners presumed to have the power to see Gods future, but most of them are just tricksters. Their contrapasso is that their heads are twisted completely around, and they can no longer see whats ahead of them. Dante sees weeping shades slowly marching in sensation file, each one covered from head to substructure with a golden cloak lined with lead.It is appropriate because on the outside the cloaks look beautiful, but on the inside they are horrible, like the hypocrites, and they are weighed down by t heir guilt. Contrapasso for thieves is depicted as serpents chasing nude sinners, and when the snake bites them, they burst into blames and disintegrate. Sometimes they become the serpent, and the serpent becomes them. This sets out to show that thieves cant even produce their own bodies. Also, the snakes represent trickery, and the serpents steal the thieves bodies, just as they stole.Bertrand de Born was guilty of separating forefather and son (King hydrogen II and son), which caused war. His contrapasso is walking around with his head stranded from his body, carrying it like a lantern. It is also symbolic of the father being the head of the family, and his body is separated from it because he separated them. In the ninth circle of Hell, Cocytus, Dante encounters the inviolate worst sinners, including fiend. These sinners are snappy with the memory of their sins, and they cannot move. These evilest of sinners are in a sea of ice. Sins of betrayal are in the ninth circle.Th ey were cold hearted and fake in life with no warmth of heart. A remarkable encounter Dante has is with Count Ugolino and Archbishop Ruggiere. In life, they made a deal, but it went awry. Now, the count feeds on the head of the archbishop. Since the archbishop lag him and sons, they starved to death, thus his contrapasso is that Ruggiere is Ugolinos last repast for all of eternity. At the end of the journey, Dante encounters Satan. He is bigger than the giants with three heads. Each head is chewing on the worst sinners in history up to that bespeak Judas, Brutus, and Cassius. They represent hate, impotence, and ignorance to contrast the three highest virtues of Heaven. Satan is at the center of the universe. His main punishment is that he is polar and cant do anything. This is the ultimate contrapasso. Dante highlights that Satan himself is an example of contrapasso as Satans sin of seeking Gods place as ruler of Heaven issuanceing in him forever public opinion over the damned. Here, the sin reflects the punishment as Satan aims to raise himself higher and as a result is cast down into the depths of the Inferno. Dante takes us on an fascinate and eye-opening journey throughout his Hell.He uses contrapasso as a way to show the many different sins and how he thinks they should be punished. Dante also places real people in his Inferno to point out the cultural and political state of Italy at that time. While he does this, he is pretty fair and impartial about who belongs in which area of Hell. Near the end of his journey, Dante finally realizes that the sinners got what they deserved, and he no longer pities them. By having Satan frozen in ice, Dante is portraying the message Satan cannot do anything, unless you let him because he is not that powerful.
